History Of Chinatown
The 1828 Town Plan drawn up by Sir Stamford Raffles set aside the area south of Singapore River for the Chinese community. Swarms of immigrants from South-eastern provinces of coastal China came to Singapore to find work.
A large number of Chinese immigrants were working as coolies (or unskilled labourers), Samsui women (female menial labourers), tailors, ‘ma jie’ (domestic servants), carpenters and street hawkers back then.
Chinatown became the place where the Chinese immigrants called home.

During Singapore’s early days, Chinatown relied on bullock carts to transport water to those living and working in the area. As such, the locals came to know Chinatown as ‘Niu Che Shui’, literally translated from Chinese to mean “bullock cart water”.
As years passed by, the Chinese immigrants developed an attachment to Chinatown and decided to anchor themselves to this place.
